Nabbit vs. Shoeboxed: Receipt Capture for Canadian Business

If you're looking for a Shoeboxed alternative for a Canadian business, the question is usually the same: does the tool read GST/HST properly, and does it sync cleanly to QuickBooks Online Canada? Shoeboxed is a long-standing US receipt scanning service that also takes paper receipts by mail. Nabbit is built in Canada around GST/HST and CRA record-keeping. This page lays out where each one fits.

Where Nabbit Has an Advantage

Canadian tax built in. Nabbit reads GST/HST as its own figure on every receipt and codes it for QuickBooks Online Canada, so the amount you claim as an Input Tax Credit is not buried in a total. Shoeboxed's pricing page does not say how it handles Canadian tax.

Priced in Canadian dollars. Nabbit quotes CAD with a free 14-day trial and no credit card. Shoeboxed lists dollar prices without naming the currency, so check what you will actually be charged.

Approval before posting. A person reviews each expense in Nabbit before it syncs to your books.

Where Shoeboxed Has an Advantage

Paper receipts. If you keep a pile of paper and would rather mail it in than photograph it, Shoeboxed will scan it for you. Nabbit works from photos.

Xero and Gmail. Shoeboxed lists Xero and Gmail receipt sync on its Pro plan and above. Nabbit does not integrate with Xero today.

Mileage tracking. Shoeboxed lists unlimited mileage tracking on every plan.

Which Is Right for You?

Choose Nabbit if: you use QuickBooks Online Canada, you want GST/HST read and coded per receipt, you want CAD pricing, and you would rather photograph receipts than mail them.

Choose Shoeboxed if: you want paper receipts scanned for you, you use Xero, you want Gmail receipts pulled in, or you want mileage in the same tool.

What Should You Check Before Choosing a Receipt Tool?

Whichever product you pick, test it against the things that cause trouble at GST/HST filing time and in a CRA audit:

How Can You Test Shoeboxed and Nabbit With Your Own Receipts?

Run ten real receipts through each tool: a faded thermal receipt, a fuel receipt, a restaurant receipt with a tip, an invoice from a supplier with a GST/HST number, and a receipt that shows GST and PST separately. Compare what each tool read against the paper, and note how many fields you had to correct by hand. Then ask what the tool does with the corrected data, because the cost of a bad read is an ITC you cannot support later. The guide on what receipts CRA requires lists exactly what a valid receipt must show.
